Daisy Brook Elementary HONORED AS #1 michigan SCHOOL IN THE
2017 SCHOLASTIC SUMMER READING CHALLENGE
Fremont’s Daisy Brook Elementary has reason to celebrate this back to school season because its students read more than 1,687,149 minutes this summer, earning them the title of “Best in State” for Michigan and 6th in the nation in the 2017 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. The school will be featured in 2018 Scholastic Book of World Records and will receive a commemorative plaque and a celebration kit to commemorate the students’ summer reading achievements. This summer, children all 50 states, Washington, D.C., two U.S. territories and 14 countries read 138,399,392 million minutes in the 2017 Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge. Daisy Brook will be celebrating this momentous reading achievement by having a “Celebration of Reading Day” on Wednesday, November 22nd, 2017. On that day, students will receive individual reading certificates and be treated to do a day all about reading. Author/Illustrator Matt Faulkner will join in the celebration by giving these students a special presentation as part of their day.
The complete list of “Best in State” schools is available at www.scholastic.com/summer.
The Scholastic Summer Reading Challenge is designed to help kids turn the “summer slide”—the learning loss which can occur over the summer months—into a “summer leap” by discovering the power and joy of reading for fun. This year’s theme, “Happy Camper: Take a Reading Adventure,” came to life featuring beloved Scholastic characters, including custom Dog Man illustrations from Dav Pilkey, bestselling author and illustrator of the Captain Underpants and Dog Man series and our Scholastic Summer Reading Global Ambassador. The program offered kids the chance to log their reading minutes to earn digital prizes as they completed weekly reading challenges, gaining access to 18 reading activities, including games, quizzes and videos based on popular children’s books. Parents and families also had access to free summer reading resources, including booklists across all age groups in both English and Spanish.
“Daisy Brook Elementary students are readers, so it was easy to get them fired-up for this event. The Daisy Brook’s “Books at the Brook” summer reading event help to keep reading fresh in the minds of the students. Our wonderful staff knows the importance of reading on a daily basis, so the students have a lot of positive role models.” commented Diane Greiner, Daisy Brook Librarian. “When I have a student say to me ‘I don’t like to read’, I reply with ‘you just haven’t found the right book’. This is so exciting to earn this achievement 2 years in a row!”

Student centered/learning focused/world ready
Thank for visiting the Daisy Brook Media Center. This Media Center is part of Daisy Brook Elementary which services 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Hours open correspond with the student's school day.
The Daisy Brook Media Center has many aspects to it. Along with having a wide selection of books, both fiction and non-fiction, we also have a mini-computer lab to accommodate 15 students individually or 30 students via dual headsets. Another enrichment factor that Daisy Brook students have available to them is ereaders. We have Kindle Touch ereaders, Kindle Fires and iPads. These are available for teachers to check out and allow students to read ebooks and audible books during the school day. Students meet, as a class, once a week in order to check out books, learn about authors, books, genres, etc. This time is spent in enhanced author talks and book talks to excite the reader in each student. Students also have the option of checking out books at any of the open check out times that are offered on a daily basis. |
